Google tasked our team with creating a networking and lounge space where attendees of Afrotech, a conference celebrating Black techies, could relax in between panels and programming. We transformed a vacant parking lot into a welcoming tent space complete with swag giveaways, photo moments, refreshments from local Black-owned businesses, and informational booths on Google products. Thousands of attendees came through the space to enjoy the outdoor lounge, photo booth, and programming from YouTube Music and Google for Startups.

In a rare opportunity, Google allowed my team of designers to bend the brand’s style guidelines and create a visual language unique to this event. Inspired by the linework of circuit boards and traditional African textiles, we developed a system of interwoven and overlapping vibrantly colored lines that appeared across mediums throughout the tent: on walls, hanging banners, layered bungee cords, photographic materials, and even an exterior billboard that stood above the lot.
